Event Description:
The Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown, along with the Frederick Douglass Institute at Kutztown University, is excited to invite the public to a public lecture entitled “Sacred Medicine through Art” by Judy Tallwing McCarthy, an Apache artist from Arizona, on March 25, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. at the Museum of Indian Culture. Admission is free. Space is limited, so please call 610-797-2121 or email info@museumofindianculture.org for reservations. Judy Tallwing McCarthy is a recognized and accomplished fine Native American artisan. The Heard Museum in Arizona and the Smithsonian both house her early paintings. Judy has a long-term history of political and social activism, and she participated in the early beginnings of N.O.W. and the ERA movement. Judy started making art along with her parents and grandparents to sell in order to help her family survive. In her youth, Judy did a little bit of everything, from running her own construction and leather production companies to serving as the executive director of a domestic violence victims program and running an animal rescue for 13 years. Starting college at age 32 changed her life; she now holds both an AA and BA degree. Judy always painted or created some form of art. "I love trying to bring the stories I've heard to life and to add the spiritual aspects of the stories through the medicine of different elements of nature,” Judy says. “Each thing that lives on the earth has its own energy and I try to put those energies together to create a healing." Judy travels to power places on the earth and brings back tiny fragments from those places to put in every painting or sculpture that calls for them. She believes that stories are the most important way we pass on our histories and they're our most powerful teaching tools. "Stories can be used to guide us; to help us heal; to make us laugh. I've been telling stories all my life, whether it was from a stage, in front of a campfire, on canvas or to a room of kids.” Join us at the Museum of Indian Culture to hear Judy talk about her amazing life and her vision of contemporary art today. For more information, please contact: Museum of Indian Culture 2825 Fish Hatchery Road Allentown, PA 18103 Phone: 610-797-2121 Email: info@museumofindianculture.org
Directions:
