Shops at City Center bring variety to downtown Allentown DONNA FISHER / THE MORNING CALL September 12, 2015 The days of Hess's, Leh's and other department stores in downtown Allentown may be gone, but a new era of retail has arrived. Since July 2014, the Shops at City Center has rapidly expanded to include 10 retailers, 11 restaurants and three more retail spaces under agreement, which will be announced soon, City Center President J.B. Reilly said at Tuesday's ribbon cutting for the ArtsWalk extension and Shops at City Center. "To go from zero to 24 shops and restaurants in just one year is a credit to the power of the Neighborhood Improvement Zone," Reilly said to a crowd of over 300 on the ArtsWalk. "I'd like once again to recognize [state] Sen. Pat Browne for the tremendous piece of legislation." Reilly also thanked other local dignitaries, including Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski, as well as the retailers themselves. "They are passionate not only about their own businesses, but they are passionate about being part of the transformation of Allentown," he added. "Because of their commitment, the Shops at City Center is a vibrant, premier walkable shopping destination and it truly offers something for everyone — from furniture to art, accessories, clothes, shoes, books, gifts, spas and handmade gelato."
