Though the start of construction of the long-awaited Route 22 widening project is nearly a decade away, work begins today on a $65 million interchange and bridge improvement project in Lehigh County. The major work spans both Hanover and Whitehall townships and includes extending the exit and entrance lanes on all four interchange ramps for the Route 22 and Fullerton Avenue portion. “The main focus of this project is the repair of the bridges,” said Sean Brown, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation. “All of them are structurally deficient. ” Wagman Heavy Civil Inc. of York is the general contractor on the $64.7 million project, which should finish in November 2020.
