Winston Churchill, one of the Hotel Bethlehem's more famous guests, once said "The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see." It seems like the Lehigh Valley is following his advice. In the midst of development that's brought us a main course of new restaurants and bars, there's been a growing interest in a side-car of music, drinks and style that reaches back about nine decades. This weekend, Bethlehem will play host to a flock of flappers and fellas doing the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug on the Hotel Bethlehem's Grand Ballroom floor; Big Woody's of Easton held a Roaring '20s Ball on April 8; the LGBT Business Council will have a Roaring '20s Gala at Silver Creek Country Club in Hellertown on May 21 — and that seems to be just the tip of the iceberg. "I've seen a lot of '20s-themed events; not just parties, restaurants and bars, but weddings as well," says Robert Sandoval, liaison to the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce's LGBT Business Council. Sandoval, an architect, says he's also seeing people who want their interiors to reflect that "Great Gatsby" sensibility.
