Brent Celek, who was part of the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl championship team, spoke at a Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce event on Wednesday night at The Homewood Suites Centennial Ballroom in Center Valley. The tight end, who was released by the Eagles in March, played in Philadelphia for 11 seasons. Celek is also an entrepreneur involved in real estate and philanthropic work. Scroll down for some of the things Celek talked about during his stop in the Lehigh Valley. Former Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek talks in Center Valley 1. Super Bowl still sinking in "I think it's just starting to sink in more and more. I think it will continue to sink in when we have our ring ceremony. Listen, when you get out and talk to people in the community, it makes it sink in more and more. It's been enjoyable to live here and see the excitement. It's everything I could've dreamed of." And Alshon comes sits next to me and I don't really know him. I'm trying to get to know him by sitting down and eating some lunch with him. And I go, 'Alshon, man, could you imagine what would happen if we win the Super Bowl around here?' And I'll never forget, Alshon goes, 'if, Brent, you mean when, we're winning this thing this year.' And for a veteran to come in there and talk to me like that, it inspired me. It did something to me. I'll tell you this, when we won the Super Bowl, I walked right up to him and said, 'bro, you remember that conversation we had?' He's like, 'hell yea, I remember that conversation. We did it!'" 3. Fake trick play for Patriots? Did the Eagles run a fake trick play in preparing for the Super Bowl in case the Patriots were taking a peek at practice? "We did. We had a fake trick play. It was the Saturday before the game and we were inside the stadium that we were going to play the game in. All the coaches, they're not even paying attention to what we're doing. They're all just looking up in the rafters. 'It's the Patriots. I know they're filming us.' So, they made up this trick play to do and we did it. It's funny. It's more funny to talk about afterward." 4. The kick that changed the season Rookie kicker Jake Elliott hit a 61-yard field goal to give the Eagles a win over the New York Giants on September 24. It's a play that catapulted the Eagles to a championship season, according to Celek. "To me, this was the catalyst for our great season. When we won this game, guys really thought we had something special. It was only the third game of the season. But we're in Philly, this doesn't happen in Philly. We don't make 61-yard field goals. It really changed us." 5. Returning to the Lehigh Valley For Celek, it was a return to the Lehigh Valley as he traveled to Lehigh University many years for training camp. "I have been here so many times for training camp. Training camp in the football world is the worst thing ever. I was a little hesitant. I appreciate you guys having me up here." 6. Free agent in grade school Celek's grade school in Cincinnati, Ohio, didn't have a football team. So, it left him spending a few years switching teams in order to get a chance to play the game. A few times Celek joined new teams based on which squad in the league had the fewest number of players. "At a young age, I was a free agent. And I hated it." 7. Playing under Mark Dantonio Celek played at the University of Cincinnati with three of those seasons being under Mark Dantonio, who has found success coaching at Michigan State University the last 11 years. "This guy was the first real coach that I was around as a head coach who demanded some serious respect. How he went about his business. How he talked to us as players. The demands he had on you being a great family member, being a great student and you being a great player." 8. Andy Reid years Celek spent much of his time in Philadelphia playing under coach Andy Reid, who now leads the Kansas City Chiefs after spending 14 years coaching the Eagles. "Something that Coach Reid did that will stick with me forever. If you do something wrong, you mess up. He'd say basically we're going to fine you or you're going to go run, you're going to do this. When you're done, he'd always say, 'listen man, I'm never going to hold grudges.' And he really took that to heart. When you were done doing penance or whatever you want to call it, he basically let it go." 9. Chip Kelly challenge Even though the Chip Kelly era didn't go as planned in Philadelphia, Celek did learn some things from the former Eagles coach. "His offense was genius. The way he taught his offense to everybody, it was the easiest thing ever to learn. And to this day, if I go coach somewhere, I'm taking his offense with me because I thought it was amazing. But the biggest thing about Chip was he worked us so hard in practice. We really only practiced for two hours a day. But because we worked so hard, you really had to take care of your body. There was no having a drink of alcohol. It was I'm drinking water, then I'm going to bed at 9 o'clock and I'm going to wake up at this time. Because if you didn't, you weren't going to make it." 10. The Players Coach Celek said the connection between Eagles coach Doug Pederson and his players this season was something truly special. "Coach Pederson played in the NFL for 13 years. So, out of all the coaches I've ever been around, he understands players better than anybody. The best thing about Coach Pederson, and I'll say this forever, is that he's so good with X's and O's and calling the right plays at the right time, he's always going to have good teams. He's putting his players in the best position to make plays. And when you do that, it changes those guys in that locker room. When they know that the coaches are putting them in the best position to make plays, they amp it up. They go even harder. I think with our belief in him as an offensive coordinator and a head coach and making great decisions, we as players really stepped up and did our part in making this season magical." NFL Draft 2018: 9 reasons why Eagles hope Giants pick Saquon Barkley 11. Foles to the rescue The season looked bleak for the Eagles when Carson Wentz went down with an ACL injury. But Nick Foles came to the rescue and helped deliver the first Super Bowl championship to Philadelphia. "This was probably some of the biggest adversity any team could ever be dealt. You basically have an MVP of the NFL tears his ACL, he's done. Most teams would basically just fold up. But we're lucky. We had Foles. And we did it. We overcame it. I can honestly tell you guys this, inside that locker room, we were just as confident with Nick Foles at quarterback as we were with Carson. It was just something inside of us. I think we felt that the season was too special. We had come too far to not do what we were supposed to do." 12. Future of Eagles Celek thinks Eagles fans should be optimistic heading into this season. "They're set up for success. They got a great O-line, D-line, great quarterbacks. The skill positions, they got a bunch of great guys in that locker room. They got to go work. It's not going to happen. But I think those guys in that locker room know that. Nothing in this league is given to you. You've got to go take it." Related: Which Eagles players will visit Donald Trump? Nick Foles, others talk plans for White House visit 13. What's next for Celek? Will Celek play in the NFL again? "I'm going to stay in shape. I'll stay ready. If it happens, it happen. If it doesn't, I go out a Super Bowl champ. That's not too bad." How about if the Eagles asked him back for another season? "Oh, I would. For sure. I'm not counting on it. But if they asked me back, for sure, I would. I feel good. My body feels good. Probably got one more season in me. But yea, we'll see." Read the original article here.
