It took a few years, but a new billboard welcoming visitors to the Easton area now overlooks Route 22. The billboard near 25th Street in Palmer Township went up July 5, 2018. "Just in time for Heritage Day," said Easton Mayor Sal Panto Jr. on Facebook. The billboard features an image from Heritage Day, the annual event that celebrates the reading of the Declaration of Independence in Easton. The city shares the distinction of being only one of three cities where such a reading took place (including Philadelphia and Trenton). The billboard is a collaboration of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, the City of Easton and J.G. Petrucci Development. Its replacement of a faded older billboard stalled in part due to the need for an engineering study to make sure the billboard was structurally sound. The new billboard features the city's new tagline, "Independent at Heart," developed by Kudu Creative. The billboard was installed by FASTSIGNS of Palmer Township. The picture will change over time, according to Laurie Nelson, vice president for Easton area initiatives for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. "We plan to switch up the design every six months. Stay tuned!" she said.
