Shutting down the free bridge over the Delaware River, Big Easy Easton Brass leads the first-ever Easton-Phillipsburg Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday, March 2, 2019, from Centre Square to South Main Street. Instead, a mass of marchers led by Big Easy Easton Brass walked right across the travel lanes Saturday during the first-ever Easton-Phillipsburg Mardi Gras Parade. The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission and police in Easton and Phillipsburg all helped to keep traffic away from the marchers, during the roughly half-hour stroll from Centre Square to South Main Street. Sandwiched in between winter storms early Saturday morning and forecast for Sunday night, the parade even brought out a little blue sky as it crossed the Delaware River. Black-tipped gulls flew overhead as Jeremy Joseph, founder and lead trumpet player in Big Easy Easton Brass, launched into "I'll Fly Away" following "When the Saints Go Marching In." Here is a look at how it all went down: Spearheading the event, in addition to the free-to-join band open to all ages and skill levels, were SoMa Downtown Grill, The Bayou Easton, the Phillipsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, the Easton Area Chamber of Commerce, Into the Sunset Entertainment and Silent Fun. After mustering at The Bayou on Centre Square and marching, participants were invited to visit P'burg's "Beermuda Triangle" comprising SoMa, Free Bridge Wind & Spirits and The Sand Bar, and to sample a "Taste of South Main" from participating restaurants The Kitchen, Jimmy’s Doggie Stand, SoMa, Taste Buds on Main,Greek Meat Guy, Joe’s Steak Shop and Eureka Plant Based Foods. Joseph, with Big Easy Easton Brass, says to look for more New Orleans-inspired musical fun patterned after second-line parades during Easton Out Loud events the fourth Friday of the month, beginning March 22.
