In an effort to support more than just Allentown businesses, Mayor Ed Pawlowski pledged $2.5 million Thursday toward a neighborhood initiative that would revitalize the city's poorest areas. The announcement, which Pawlowski made before a meeting of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce at Muhlenberg College, came on the heels of an update from developer J.B. Reilly on the multimillion-dollar projects he is developing in the city's Neighborhood Improvement Zone. Quoting Fiorello LaGuardia, mayor of New York City in the mid-20th century, Pawlowski said "only a well-fed, well-housed, well-schooled people can enjoy the blessings of liberty."
