Banners highlighting Nazareth's business district could soon adorn the downtown to try to attract more people into the borough. Stephanie Varone, hired last year as the borough's downtown coordinator, approached council this evening about raising funds to buy 20 banners for $4,000. The fundraiser would partially cover $165 for each banner and hardware, and another $35 each for the public works department to hang them. A grant from the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce's Main Street Lehigh Valley is expected to cover the rest of the costs. "I'd love to do this sooner than later," Varone told council. She wants to hold the fundraiser in May and order the banners by June. Varone expects to hang the banners around the circle, Main Street, Belvidere Street and Broad Street. The blue banners would celebrate the borough's 275th anniversary. She said they'd last at least five years. "They would make the town look active, proud and revitalized," she said. Varone added the banners would improve the borough's image and identity. As a former New Hope boutique owner, she said the banners there enhanced how visitors felt about shopping downtown.
