There are nearly a half-billion dollars in state Department of Transportation construction projects underway in the Greater Lehigh Valley. And there is going to be more. Lots more. State Department of Transportation district press officer Ronald J. Young told business leaders that thanks to the new transportation funding law, many more improvement projects are either about to break ground or are in the pipeline. "All of the potholes and deteriorated roads you see this spring as a result of a harsh winter, we'll be able to put a band-aid on these and hopefully fix all of them," Young said Wednesday afternoon at Brookside Country Club in Macungie. But it's more than pothole repairs. Perhaps the Lehigh Valley's busiest artery, Route 22, is in for a major overhaul. "Right now there is about $468 million worth of projects currently underway in [PennDOT's] District 5," Young said of Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton and Schuylkill counties. "Now that we've allocated the proper funding, several more projects will break ground, and we have many in the design phase," he said at the joint business luncheon held by the East Penn Chamber and Western Lehigh Chamber, partners with the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.
