The Route 412 expansion in the Bethlehem-Hellertown area is running a year behind schedule and won't be completed until fall 2016, officials said today. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials discovered a much higher-than-expected water table where Route 412 crosses the Saucon Creek, requiring the redesign of both the bridge and sewer pipe in the area. That is the main reason for the delay, officials told the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber of Commerce during an update this morning at Hellertown Borough Hall. Many in attendance let out heavy sighs when the delay was announced. The project has caused a major reduction in sales for many Hellertown-area businesses, chamber President Stephanie Weitzman said. "Some unfortunate news was given to our businesses today," she said. "The expectation of this was 2015, and now it's going to be 2016. It's a little jolting to our business owners."
