Solar-powered bus shelters are joining LANTA's fleet of more than 90 covered waiting areas for users of the publicly funded bus service. The pricey new shelters use solar cells to convert sunlight to electricity, storing the power in batteries to illuminate the waiting area for customers, as well as the advertisements that help pay for shelter maintenance, according to Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority Planning Director Owen O'Neil. The first of the aluminum-frame, glass-sided shelters with solar panels mounted on metal roofs debuted recently at the southwest corner of Lehigh and Vultee streets in Allentown. At about $9,400, each "green" kiosk costs $3,000 more than a model powered by a standard electrical connection.
