Bethlehem is removing 10 trees on Main Street but plans to supplant them with the largest possible replacement trees. The trees that are being removed are diseased and wouldn't survive a sidewalk replacement project the city is starting, Bethlehem Public Works Director Michael Alkhal said. "The trees are lifting sidewalks, and in order to fix said sidewalks, their root would be affected to the point where the already diseased/declining trees in question would die anyway," Alkhal said in an email. The sidewalk repair is part of a $500,000 streetscape project along Main Street, between Church and Broad streets. It started Tuesday and is expected to run through June.
