After delaying changes to the city's parking meters for a year, Allentown is dusting off plans to extend meter hours. And this time, the city proposes motorists feed the meters even longer and pay twice as much in the central business district. City council last week introduced a measure to extend parking meter hours to 10 p.m. and boost the hourly rate to $2 along a seven-block stretch of Hamilton Street. City council's public works committee is scheduled to discuss the changes during its next meeting 5:30 p.m. April 15. In a memo to city council, the administration notes that a survey conducted by the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce showed a vast majority of downtown merchants indicated their customers complain about a lack of nearby parking.
