It's one of those inventions so ubiquitous that no one gives it a second thought anymore: the dimmer switch.. So spare a thought for its creator, Joel Spira, who died of natural causes Wednesday at his Springfield Township, Bucks County, home. He was 88 years old and had spent more than five decades quietly helming Lutron Electronics Co., the Upper Saucon Township electronics giant he launched after devising the mood-changing, energy-saving switch in a spare room of his Brooklyn apartment. "From a business-leader perspective, he was a giant, and giants are hard to come by," said Tony Iannelli, president and CEO of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.
