Hellertown Historical Society (HHS) is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of Hellertown. In 1984, the Society was granted a 99 year lease from the Borough of Hellertown to occupy, restore, and maintain a major portion of Hellertown’s historical 35 acre Heller-Wagner Grist Mill tract and its buildings. The grounds adjoin the Saucon Rail Trail and The Grist Mill Park. Ample free parking is available.
Visitors may tour the circa 1761 Heller-Wagner Grist Mill, which was restored by the Society in the late 1980’s as the Wagner Grist Mill of the 1940’s. It is one of the oldest landmarks in Hellertown. Tours allow visitors to view the mill’s gear mechanisms, machinery, scale, hopper, and mill race. A highlight of the tour is the Grist Mill Museum which houses an eclectic mix of scenes depicting life in Hellertown’s earlier days.
The Barn Museum houses agricultural implements and machinery. A circa 1700's Wash House and a circa 1880's Miller's House is also open to the public with exhibits, Gift Shop, and Society offices. Hours for tours are 9:00 am -11:30 am Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and by appointment. In 2000, HHS completed the restoration of the circa 1860 Walnut Street Pony Bridge. In April, 2000, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and Preservation Pennsylvania awarded the restoration of The Pony Bridge a “Special Historical Properties Award.”
A major refurbishment of the floor and support beams was completed by the Society in 2012, and the bridge is once again open to foot traffic. Hellertown Historical Society is a 501 (c) (3) non profit organization.
