Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) will offer summer classes in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at its main campus in Schnecksville designed specifically for students in grades 6 through 10. These brain fitness classes, entitled “Pump up Your Brain!” are taught by LCCC instructors. Participants can choose from one-week sessions that teach Everyday Biotechnology and the applications of chemistry and biology, where students will explore scientific concepts that can be applied in the home and garden. The following classes will be held Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for students in grades 9-10 (rising). Fee is $200 per week; additional materials fee may apply. July 10-14 Chemistry in the Kitchen (YOU 520-10) July 17-21 Playing in the Dirt (YOU 520-10A) Computer Science Principles: Code! Play! Game! teaches gaming concepts through racing games, mazes and other activities. Students will create their own video games using a free, easy drag-and-drop program designed by M.I.T. The following classes will be held Monday through Friday, June 26-30. Fee is $150 per week. Grades 6-8 (rising) 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. (YOU 521-55) Grades 9-10 (rising) 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. (YOU 521-55A) The Women in Science: 19th Century – Present class pays special attention to the work in microbiology of Dr. Emmanuelle Charpentier, who discovered the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing molecule, and a thorough investigation of the most famous Nobel Prize-winning “women in science”. The following class will be held Monday through Thursday, July 10-20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for a fee of $400.
