Event Description: On Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 7 pm, AAUW-Bethlehem is sponsoring a free, public program, titled “Right Here at Home - Violence Against Women” at Northampton Community College, College Center, Room 220, 3835 Green Pond Road, 18020,. Dr. Rita M. Jones, Director of the Women’s Center of Lehigh University, will moderate a panel of experts that includes representatives from the Crime Victims Council, Northampton Community College and Turning Point of the Lehigh Valley. Using “What If….” scenarios and questions from the audience, the panel will address key issues of violence against women including blaming the survivor while absolving the perpetrator. Other topics include the idea that violence can happen only “to someone else, not to me”; the overwhelming emotional challenges in the reporting of a family member and subsequent court hearings; the resources that are available and accessible to victims; and identifying what violence is, including physical and emotional abuse.
