Event Description: Don’t be late for a date with Pennsylvania Youth Theatre! When we bring Lewis Carroll’s magnificent adventure to Bethlehem May 9-18, 2014 Follow Alice down the legendary rabbit hole into a beguiling land of wonder. Meet the grinning Cheshire Cat, have tea with the Mad Hatter and play croquet with the King and Queen of Hearts! Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland comes to life on stage at The Charles A. Brown Historic Ice House in Bethlehem. Written in 1865, Carroll’s celebrated book has captured imaginations for generations. His tales have spawned a parade of adaptations. This version was adapted for the stage by Sharon Holland, and cleaves closely to Carroll’s original novels. Alice in Wonderland is produced by special arrangement with Plays for Young Audiences, a partnership of Seattle Children's Theatre and Children's Theatre Company-Minneapolis. “In putting this production together, I’ve found myself drawn to the aesthetics of Steampunk. For those of you who don’t know, Steampunk is a recent strand of speculative fiction that combines the fantastical imagining of an alternate universe with the gears, geegaws, and industrial underbelly of Victorian England” says James Peck, Professor of Theatre at Muhlenberg College and Director of PYT’s presentation of Alice in Wonderland. “In again interpreting this much-told story, I do hope my choice of a Steampunk setting adds a bit of a contemporary spice to our production. But more essentially, I hope it sends us back to the story’s roots in nineteenth-century England. It is, after all, a ramble through the dreamworld of an especially precocious, especially curious Victorian girl.” PYT’s steam-punk re-telling of Alice in Wonderland will rotate two amazingly talented casts throughout the show’s two-week run. Alongside professional actor and mentor, Mark McKenna, 54 PYT students will dive into dozens of roles to bring Carroll’s nonsensical work to life. Choreographer, Camille Armstrong, and Costume Designer, William Bauman, return to the creative team for PYT’s foray into Wonderland.
