Event Description: Lehigh Carbon Community College’s (LCCC) Diversity Committee will hold a Hispanic Heritage event with Javier Avila, of Bethlehem, a professor at Northampton Community College (NCC), at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2. The talk will be held in rooms 107-108 of the Alumni Center on LCCC’s Schnecksville campus. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Avila attended the University of Puerto Rico and was hired at age 23 as a full-time professor after graduating with his master’s degree. He went on to complete his doctorate program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At NCC, Avila teaches English, creative writing, poetry and contemporary literature. Nominated by NCC, Avila was honored as the 2015 Pennsylvania Professor of the Year Award sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. He is a renowned poet and novelist and achieved international recognition for his bestselling novel Different, which went on to become an award-winning motion picture in a dozen countries. He will perform his one man show, “The Trouble with My Name,” which has earned him praise as a powerful voice for Latinos in the U.S. Avila’s presentation spotlights his qualities as a poet and professor, profiling the autobiographical journey of a Latino man moving between cultures while overcoming misconceptions about identity, language, race and social justice.
